What is Pilates?

Pilates is named after creator Joseph H. Pilates. It is a method of exercises that has been practiced in the US since the 1920's. These exercises are composed of many controlled, precise movements, designed to stretch and strengthen, creating long lean muscles without bulk. They require concentration and deep, coordinated, breaths working the body and the mind. Pilates exercises focus on your body's core "powerhouse" - abdomen, lower back, and buttocks to build strength and agility in a balanced way. Pilates is performed on a padded floor mat or with special apparatus such as the Reformer, Chairs, Cadillac, Barrels, Ped-o-Pul, and Magic Circle.
